The Director, Event Operations is a member of NIC’s Senior Leadership Team and delivers on the long-range vision for NIC’s conferences and meetings by overseeing event operations, planning and execution for the Fall Conference, Spring Investment Forum, business meetings and other ad-hoc activities. We are looking for a person who has an unflappable style and positive attitude with a team-first outlook to be responsible for leadership and innovation around the core operational functions of NIC events while leading a cross-functional team that works seamlessly across the broader Connections group, staff and volunteer leadership, and other teams within the organization.


  • Drive the operational planning process for all NIC events and business meetings, working in close concert with those in the organization, leading strategy, attendee experiences and/or production and content across major platforms.
  • Integrate core operational functions to drive increased efficiency and even stronger results—this includes but is not limited to site selection/contract negotiation, expense management, planning and execution, contractor management/procurement, hotel operations and management, reporting and post-event reconciliation and Planning Team operations.
  •  Deliver premier events that allow for innovative and unique attendee and stakeholder (Partners/Sponsors) experiences—driving innovation through every facet of event operations.


  • Supervises two (2) non-supervisory employees—Event Manager, Logistics and Registration and Events Coordinator.


  • Degree from four-year college or university or relevant experience.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible conference and meeting planning experience, with at least seven years at full management level.
  • 5+ years supervisory/leadership experience managing a sizable direct team as well as leading and managing a sizable indirect team of vendors and partners
  • A clear skill for working collaboratively across matrixed organization, while being able to drive timely decisions and positive outcomes
  • Comprehensive knowledge/experience of all aspects of conference planning, including site selection, contract negotiation, registration, housing, audiovisual and execution
  • Ability to manage event projects at the same time across variable planning cycles
  • Ability to travel overnight 10-15% of the year
  • CMP/CMM certification a plus


  • Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment, but may involve exposure to moderate noise levels. Work involves operation of personal computer equipment for six to eight hours daily and includes physical demands associated with a traditional office setting, e.g., walking, standing, communicating, and other physical functions as necessary.
